Music is an art form that primarily conveys through sounds. It has existed since thousand of years ago ever since the primitive ages and the first ever musical instruments was the human voice itself.
After countless of years of refinery and modifications to the sounds, we have the music that we have today. Throughout history, music has proved to be relevant even though it has existed for a really long time.
However, in recent times, people have started questioning the importance of music. It doesn't really have any significant economic and political impact to the world, is it even beneficial?
Is music important?
Well, I think music is important.
Improves Our Mood
People often question the weird erratic feeling that music gives to them. Those are called our "emotions". Music has been known to be able to engage with our emotions and even improves our mood.
When we listen to sad music, it brings most listeners pleasure and comfort, according to recent research from Durham University in the United Kingdom and the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, published in PLOS ONE.
And when we listen to happy music, it improves our mood and much more than that. In a press release, lead study author, Yuna Ferguson, noted that happiness has been linked to better physical health, higher income, and greater relationship satisfaction.
Is music important in this sense? Yes, it is.
Communicating Our Emotions
Often when we listen to music, we are able to get what emotions that the music is trying to express. And that emotions are directly from the creator of the music. In a way, music has allowed music producers and performers a chance to communicate their emotions to the audience and act as a kind of relief for them.
Sometimes, it might be hard to express how we are feeling during a certain period of time and music might be the best way to express it. This can in turn reduce our stress, share our happiness or experiences through music.
Music Is Universal
Music, in its essence, is just sounds. Hence, it is natural for everyone to appreciate and listen to music, regardless of their ethnicity, race, culture and religion.
Music is able to transmit emotions and feelings through various sounds and make the listeners feel what the music creators are feeling, even if there are no words. It is as though music is a language by itself that is known by everyone in the world.
We can see this when we look at BTS, a world renowned Kpop group that happened to become famous in America when they do not speak English fluently. Instead, their Korean songs caught the attention of the Americans and made them fans of BTS. How magical is this.
So in summary, why is music important?
Music is really important even when people say it isn't. It just means that they do not see the bigger picture.
It is true that there are other ways to transmit our emotions and ideas and languages we can use to communicate. However, music trancends all of it and gives us the direct answer to all.
